You’ve probably heard a lot about social bookmarking of late. It is one of the newest rages on the Internet. If you’re like most people, you probably have no idea what this phenomenon is. Is it the newest thing since sliced bread? Will it really make you rich overnight? Is it something that everybody is doing but nobody really knows what to do with it? Is it even worth doing at all? In its simplest form, social bookmarking is the practice of going to specially designated sites and telling others about some of your favorite sites to go to and then leaving them the URL so that they can check it out. However, in practice, things aren’t this easy.

Most social bookmarking sites have very strict guidelines about posting links. Some will only allow you to post a link to your site if you post X number of links to other sites. Some won’t let you post links to your site at all and some just don’t care what you do. So you have to carefully read the terms of service of each site because they will all be different.

As to the benefits of these sites, the jury is still out on them. Some say that Google, which is pretty much the most powerful, if not most popular search engine, really likes these sites. Others say that this is just a fad and will quickly die. Regardless of what the facts are, many people are going to these sites and dropping links like my grandmother dropped stitches when she got too old to see what she was doing.

The truth is, because social bookmarking is so new, a lot of people really don’t know what to do with this animal. As a result, a lot of books are coming out on the subject, supposedly telling everybody how to rake in the bucks with social bookmarking. Of course nobody really knows if the people writing these books are actually seeing any kind of profit from this beast.

As with anything else, social bookmarking will eventually either solidify itself and become a respected form of promotion, or it will go the way of the FFA sites, which actually at one time used to be a great way to promote your business until the ad blasters came around. As long as these social bookmarking sites stay away from automation, we should be safe.

Otherwise, there’s going to be a lot of social bookmarking books that are going to be quite obsolete, quite fast.
