Multi-Level Marketing operates from a simple platform. If you have a product you can sell it one of two ways: sell it directly yourself, or recruit others who will buy your product from you to sell to other people. If these recruits also recruit others who will buy and sell your product, who then recruit others and if you get a cut of what everybody else sells, then you have the basics of an MLM scheme.
Multi-level marketing is a form of pyramid selling. Eventually people must lose money, since there is only a finite number of people in the world. If you recruit ten people, and each of these recruits ten people, and so on, to reach level ten there would need to be ten thousand million people in the scheme!
However, if managed properly, multi level marketing can be successful, and a good way to make money. However, the product must be at least as important as the recruitment in making money, and members should be able to make a good income simply by selling the product if that is what they want to do. They should also be able to supplement that by recruiting others when they are able to. If your recruits do not have to buy the product from you, but can sell it themselves in the same that you would sell an affiliate product, then even better.
One aspect of an MLM business to watch out for is whether or not you have to pay for your own promotional materials, and for your training. If so then be careful and check out the internet to find out if the consensus deems it a scam or not. You should not have to pay for promotional material if you are trying to sell product for a company, and all training necessary should be free. Occasionally you might have to pay for leads, but that is acceptable.
If you have all the promotional material to pay for, then you will have to sell a lot to make up for it. Many MLM companies work very close to the limits of the law regarding the importance of the product to making money, and if the product is highly overpriced you might have difficulty selling any. Your income will then come from your down-line. This situation will be particularly evident if you have to pay to join the company or sell the product to your down-line. You should not have to pay to work for a reputable and legal company.
