Well, what better way is there to answer the question “What is internet marketing,” than starting with some dictionary definitions…

Merriam-Websters Dictionary defines “Internet” as: An electronic communications network that connects computer networks and organizational computer facilities around the world.

“Marketing” is defined as: The process or technique of promoting, selling and distributing a

product or service.

Therefore, if the two definitions are combined, then Internet Marketing would be:

“The process or technique of promoting, selling and distributing a product or service using

an electronic communications network that connects computer networks and organizational

computer facilities around the world.”

Given that, I think it would be safe to say, that a more practical definition of Internet Marketing for our purposes may be:

“The use of the Internet to advertise and sell products or services.”

The path this takes is often something like:

1) Using Websites and e-mail to inform customers about a product,

2) Solicit and answer the customers questions, and

3) Accept their orders electronically via the Internet.

Now, to these ends, anything that can be sold in the brick and mortar world can be sold

via the Internet. There are even some things you can get on the Internet that you can NOT

get in the brick and mortar world.

Typically, selling things in the brick and mortar world means that the customer contacts the

seller by going into his place of business or by phone. Real world merchandise is always delivered

physically.

In the world of Internet Marketing products can be physically delivered, of course, but many

things that are sold on the Internet can be delivered electronically, as well.

For example: Information is available in the form of eBooks, sound files and video files that can

be downloaded directly from the site that is selling them. Obviously, this reduces or completely eliminates delivery charges. However, if it better serves the needs of customers, these products

can also usually be ordered in a hard copy form (books, CDs and DVDs) and physically delivered

to the buyer.

As you can see, the term Internet Marketing covers an wide variety of types promoting, selling

and delivery of products and services. These products and services may be delivered electronically or by traditional freight to the end user. With this kind of breadth and depth, the possibilities and potential of Internet Marketing seems to be endless.

And that is exciting indeed…
