When you think about internet marketing, you probably think of online ads, article marketing, etc. One often overlooked area of internet marketing is forums. You probably have more than one forum relating to your niche that you visit frequently. Are you using it to the maximum advantage to promote your site?

Promoting through forums can be tricky, but if you know what youre doing, it can be a highly effective method of advertising and is completely free! It pays to learn how to do it properly.

The first thing you should do when signing in to a new forum or message board is take a look at the rules. There is usually a sticky post within the newcomers lounge or you might be sent a specific email that outlines the rules of the forum. Be sure to follow these to avoid having your posts deleted. The rules will also state whether or not you can post links in your messages as well as guidelines for your signature line, the line that is automatically added to every message you post.

If you arent already using the sig line feature in the forums where you post, you are missing out on a lot of publicity! A good sig line draws attention, but doesnt look spammy. Another overlooked place to include information about your business is in your profile. Make it public and write a little about yourself. You should be able to include at least one website address, but you will need to check the rules just in case. In the bio section, you can let people know what you do for a living and guide them to your website.

To ensure that people take you seriously once you have your great sig line and profile, you will need to make some high quality posts. Dont just say hi in order to get your URL out there, this will get you banned from most forum very quickly. Instead, offer helpful responses and useful discussions that will help cement your reputation. Then people will begin to trust you to have the good information and they will click on your links!
