Have you ever known something and thought, Well, everyone knows that.

Recently I was talking with someone who spends a lot of time online. I mentioned Google Alerts and she had no clue what it is.

Even if you know about it, Ill tell you some of how I use it and you might get some new ideas.

First, Google Alerts will do just that, alert you to any specific word or phrase that Google spiders pick up. This is why, by the way, you need to be very specific.

For example, since I have a high profile on the web and am writing articles, etc. I have my name, Tom Justin as a daily alert.

Then, my book, How to Take No For An Answer And Still Succeed. Also on the alert list are my specific websites.

Its kind of amazing and surprising to see what alerts come in some days.

For example, I also put out alerts for the articles I write. One recent one has gone all over the world. What I Learned From A Drunken, One-Eyed Indian is showing reprints everywhere, including some newspaper in Punjab India. I wonder if they know what kind of Indian I was referring to?

Anyway, its all fascinating and you use it for any specific interest you want to list.

I choose mine to come back to me for each selection, once a day. Ive got some business interests that I would like to see right away if Google picks them up, so they are listed as they occur.

If you have kids on the Internet, it can be handy for that too.If your child’s name pops up you’ll be presented with an immediate link to check it out.

Did you know that potential employers are Googling the web now? Lets say a 16-year-old posted some really nasty stuff online. Five years later, fresh out of college, this young man or woman is now ready to build a life. Its scary what Google could bring up.
